Peer Mentor

PEER MENTORS HAVE BEEN IN RECOVERY FOR A MINIMUM OF 6 MONTHS AND IDEALLY HAVE CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM.

The Parenting Peer Mentor will play an integral role of support, coaching and guidance for families involved in the child welfare system in Pinellas County. The Parenting Peer Mentor will serve as a team member in the shared decision making process and service provision to families to aid in completing their case plan. The Parenting Peer Mentor will be assigned to work with parents with a substance abuse, mental health or co-occurring mental health & substance abuse concern and serves as a system navigator who supports the parent in recovery. Directions for Living has embarked upon implementing and imbedding Trauma Informed Care principles throughout our agency. Candidates should have knowledge and/or interest in assisting Directions for Living carry out this implementation.

DUTIES

  • Assist the parent in quick engagement to treatment and recovery based services.
  • Provide support in navigation of the recovery community including linkage to 12 step, peer to peer, and other recovery support programs.
  • Serve as an advocate for parents and sssist parents in having a voice in their treatment.
  • Support the parent in identification of relapse triggers.
  • Provide assistance in accessing community resources (i.e. food stamps, employment, housing, social security, etc.).
  • Assist parents or caregivers with basic living skills necessary to function independently in the community.
  • Participate in the Integrated Decision Team Staffings. Providing observations of family centered strengths and needs.
  • Arrange and transport parents or caregivers to appointments/activities related to treatment or case plan goals.
  • Support, enhance, and compliment the services provided by the In-Home counselor, which includes assessments, planning, linkage, advocacy, and monitoring.
  • Assist with other program tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Formal Education
    • Candidates will have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. Experience in social services is preferred.
  • Skills
    • Must be highly motivated and self-directed.
    • Must be able to coach, mentor and support families experiencing trauma, mental health and/or substance abuse.
  • Experience/Knowledge
    • History of successful reunification with children through completion of child welfare case plan.
    • Knowledge of community supports and services to aid in supporting the family.
  • Ability
    • Ability to stay calm and follow procedures in a crisis.
    • Must be able to monitor both verbal and non-verbal communication and observe clients through visual and auditory means.
    • Must be able to communicate both verbally in written format with clients and co-workers and listen to their communication.
