Grant Writer and Donor Specialist

The Grant Writer and Donor Specialist is responsible for taking leadership on several department initiatives, including: research and completion of new business proposals (grants, RFPs, ITNs); donor relations and development; fundraising research and market trends; sponsor recruitment and direct fundraising support of large semi-annual events; and other administrative tasks and functions related to the Marketing and Business Development department of Directions for Living.  This position requires a high level of independent judgment in reviewing and evaluating possible sources of funds. There is a high level of responsibility for meeting communicated goals which directly impact the financial status of the business. This position exercises discretion in decision making on a daily basis to select, prepare and coordinate the grants and donor process. It is the responsibility of this position to analyze the options, determine the cost/benefit ratio and oversee and facilitate partner or civic-sponsored fundraising events. This position requires minimal supervision.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Research, writing, and submitting new business proposals (grants, ITNs, RFPs), individually or when working with partners
  2. Tracking all monetary and in-kind donations
  3. Donor acknowledgement on a bi-weekly basis
  4. Recruiting donations and establishing drives/events/programs with individuals, corporations, civic partners, churches, and other
  5. Managing pickup/drop off and all logistics related to monetary and in-kind donations
  6. Facilitate tours and presentations with potential donors
  7. Research of industry fundraising trends
  8. Complete Letters of Support and support documents for partner organizations
  9. Support large fundraising events through recruiting sponsors and managing direct fundraising support
  10. Other tasks and functions related to Marketing and Business Development department of Directions for Living.

 

In addition to the departmental tasks listed above which the position will be continuously responsible for, this position will be expected to take creative leadership and initiative  and full responsibility in executing the following, upon review with the Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development:

 

  1. Must have a minimum of 2 new business proposals submitted per month
  2. Responsible for 8 donor outreach initiatives per month (recruitment of individual donors, partner meetings with churches or civic organizations, corporate partners)
  3. 1 partner/civic-sponsored fundraising event per month.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Research, coordinate, and write new business proposals and reports to corporate, foundation, and government funders; at least TWO PER MONTH. Review and update current or renewable grants/contracts to maintain compliance and ensure continued funding, with guidance of Director of Marketing and Business Development.
  2. Facilitate donor outreach initiatives, including individual donors, church or civic fundraising events or direct donations, and corporate partnerships at least EIGHT PER MONTH
  3. Facilitate partner or civic-sponsored fundraising events (i.e. food drives, donation drives, workout-for-a-cause, restaurant charity nights, etc. using partners' existing resources) at least ONE PER MONTH
  4. Assist in the planning of large semi-annual fundraising and training events coordinated by the Director of Marketing and Business Development and/or Supervisor of Communications and Special Events, including leadership on certain tasks or elements (sponsor recruitment, management of individual fundraising elements)
  5. Work with Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development to meet agency revenue goals and manage budgets through capital campaign, grants and contracts, and fund-raising initiatives
  6. Communicate timely and creative thank you and acknowledgement letters to donors
  7. Recruit and strengthen the Directions for Living donor base while collecting, coordinating, and tracking donations (individuals, foundations, corporations) and building relationships with current and prospective funders/supporters, especially individual donors.
  8. Assist in the maintenance of donor-tracking software (data-entry, gift processing).
  9. Assist with all Development-related administrative tasks as needed
  10. Schedule and assist in facilitating tours of all Directions for Living facilities.
  11. Attend scheduled departmental meetings to ensure strategic goals are being met and priorities are aligned.
  12. Assist with media/marketing in-kind donations, including donated ad space/media exposure, collaboration with fellow businesses/brands, and/or broad exposure as the main goals.
  13. Attend community events, development workshops, job and health fairs, etc. on behalf of Directions for Living.

 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor trends in the development industry

Serve as a public representative of the organization, including cultivating relationships with community members, prospective     volunteers and supporters in order to build awareness of and commitment to Directions'

Attend all job-related meetings, as appropriate.

Visit or work at sites outside the office as needed or required for service provisions and provide own safe transportation to such locations.

Will be knowledgeable in and practice all   policies and procedures related to privacy and security practices cited in the Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) applicable to my program and position.

 

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in Fundraising, Marketing, Communications, Sales, Public Relations or English Relations or other closely related field or a Bachelor's degree in any of the identified fields with a minimum of seven years' experience.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Familiarity with Requests for Proposals, Invitations to Negotiate, and other bid-for-contract proposals

Familiarity with regional, state, and federal grants and foundations.

Minimum of 1-2 years' experience in fundraising, public relations/marketing and/or grant writing preferred

3-5 years of grant writing experience required

1-2 years in not-for-profit development or fundraising preferred

Knowledge of community mental health, social services, child welfare/safety, or other not-for-profit agencies, is preferred

Experience in creative writing and planning special events

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT/OTHERS:

 

To sit for long periods of time often while performing data entry.

To manipulate charts weighing 3 pounds from horizontal and vertical filings systems, lift them vertically to arm's length and to bend to lowest filing cabinets and drawers for filing purposes.
